[L[Learn Korean Day 24] Is It Spicy? 15 Essential Taste & Cooking Words

Hello, Korean learners! Welcome back to Day 24 with Instructor Soona.
If you love Korean culture, you probably love Korean food (K-Food)! From the fiery red Tteokbokki to the sweet and savory Bulgogi, the world of Korean flavors is vast and exciting. But how do you describe what you're eating? And how do you talk about cooking these delicious dishes?
Today, we are going to learn 15 essential words for tastes and cooking actions. These words will help you navigate a Korean restaurant and even follow a Korean recipe!
Let’s dive right in!
1. The 5 Basic Tastes (기본 맛)
How does it taste? Read these descriptive verbs out loud:
1. 달다 [dal-da] - To be sweet
2. 맵다 [maep-da] - To be spicy / hot
Usage: 이거 너무 매워요! (This is too spicy!)
3. 짜다 [jja-da] - To be salty
4. 쓰다 [sseu-da] - To be bitter
5. 시다 [si-da] - To be sour
6. 고소하다 [go-so-ha-da] - To be nutty / savory (like sesame oil or roasted nuts)
7. 담백하다 [dam-baek-ha-da] - To be light / clean / mild (not greasy or strong)
2. Essential Cooking Verbs (요리 동사)
Want to try making Kimchi or Ramen? You need these action words!
8. 요리하다 [yo-ri-ha-da] - To cook
9. 끓이다 [kkeul-i-da] - To boil (liquids like soup or ramen)
10. 굽다 [gup-da] - To grill / roast / bake (like Korean BBQ or bread)
11. 볶다 [bok-da] - To stir-fry (like Fried Rice)
12. 튀기다 [twi-gi-da] - To deep-fry (like Korean Fried Chicken)
13. 자르다 [ja-reu-da] - To cut / slice
14. 섞다 [seok-da] - To mix (like Bibimbap!)
15. 넣다 [neo-ta] - To put in / add (ingredients)
Usage: 소금을 넣으세요. (Please add salt. )
3. The Most Important Question
When you are eating with a Korean friend, they will almost always ask you this:
"맛있어요?" [ma-sit-seo-yo?] (Is it delicious?)
To answer politely, you can say: "네, 정말 맛있어요!" (Yes, it's really delicious!)
4. Soona's Culture Tip: The Spectrum of "Spicy"
In Korea, 맵다 (spicy) is not just a taste; it's a lifestyle! However, foreigners often find that "mild" in Korea is still quite spicy.
If you are at a restaurant and want to check the spice level, you can ask: "많이 매워요?" (Is it very spicy?)
If you can't handle spicy food well, use this magic phrase: "안 맵게 해주세요." (Please make it not spicy.)
Also, remember that in Korean, "Hot" has two different words:
매워요: Spicy (Taste)
뜨거워요: Hot (Temperature) Don't mix them up, or people might think your mouth is physically burning from the heat!
5. Mini Pop Quiz!
Let’s test your "Tasty" vocabulary.
Q1. You are eating a piece of cake. Which word describes its "Sweet" taste?
A) 시다 B) 달다 C) 짜다
