Master Korean opposite adjectives for state, feelings, and temperature.

Hello, Korean learners! Welcome back to Day 22 with Instructor Soona.


In Day 21, we mastered adjectives related to size and quantity. Today, we are going to dive into "Part 2" of our Opposite Adjectives series! We will focus on words that describe States, Feelings, and Temperature.


Being able to say whether a movie is fun, a task is easy, or the coffee is too hot will make your Korean sound much more expressive.


Let’s learn these 14 essential "pair" words!



1. Quality & Feelings (상태와 느낌)


How do you judge something? Read these out loud:


1. 좋다 [jo-ta] - To be good

2. 나쁘다 [na-ppeu-da] - To be bad

  • Usage: 기분이 좋아요. (I feel good.) / 날씨가 나빠요. (The weather is bad.)


3. 재미있다 [jae-mi-it-da] - To be fun / interesting

4. 재미없다 [jae-mi-eop-da] - To be boring / uninteresting

  • Usage: 한국 영화는 재미있어요! (Korean movies are fun!)


5. 쉽다 [swip-da] - To be easy

6. 어렵다 [eo-ryeop-da] - To be difficult / hard

  • Usage: 한국어 공부는 재미있지만 조금 어려워요. (Studying Korean is fun but a bit difficult.)



2. Temperature: Weather vs. Touch (온도)


In Korean, the words for "hot" and "cold" change depending on whether you are talking about the weather or an object you touch!


For Weather & Atmosphere:


7. 덥다 [deop-da] - To be hot (weather)

8. 춥다 [chup-da] - To be cold (weather)


For Food & Objects (Touch):


9. 뜨겁다 [tteu-geop-da] - To be hot (to the touch)

10. 차갑다 [cha-gap-da] - To be cold (to the touch)

Usage: 여름은 더워요. (Summer is hot.) / 커피가 뜨거워요. (The coffee is hot.)



3. The Middle Ground & Speed (상태와 속도)


11. 따뜻하다 [tta-tteut-ha-da] - To be warm

12. 시원하다 [si-won-ha-da] - To be cool / refreshing


13. 빠르다 [ppa-reu-da] - To be fast

14. 느리다 [neu-ri-da] - To be slow



4. Soona's Culture Tip: The Mystery of "시원하다" (Si-won-ha-da)


If you go to a Korean restaurant and see a Korean person eating a steaming hot bowl of spicy soup, they might sigh and say: "아~ 시원하다!"


Wait... didn't we just learn that 시원하다 means "cool"? Why would they say that while eating something boiling hot?


In Korea, the word "시원하다" has a deeper meaning. It describes a refreshing feeling that releases tension in your body. It can be used for:


  1. A cool breeze on a fall day (Actual temperature).

  2. A very refreshing, savory hot soup (The feeling of your stomach warming up).

  3. A good massage that hits the right spot!


So if you eat hot soup in Korea, try saying "시원해요!" like a local. Everyone will be impressed by your deep understanding of the Korean heart!
