[Learn Korean Day 23] What Do You Do for Fun? 15 Hobbies & Leisure Words

Vocabulary for hobbies and leisure activities in Korean for beginners.

Hello, Korean learners! Welcome back to Day 23 with Instructor Soona.

When you make new friends in Korea, one of the most common questions you'll be asked is: "취미가 뭐예요?" (What is your hobby?). Being able to talk about what you enjoy doing in your free time is a fantastic way to connect with people and find common interests.

Today, we are going to learn 15 essential words for popular hobbies and leisure activities. Let’s see how many of these you already enjoy!

1. Popular Leisure Nouns (취미 명사)

Read these out loud:

1. 영화 [yeong-hwa] - Movie

2. 음악 [eu-mak] - Music

3. 여행 [yeo-haeng] - Travel / Trip

4. 게임 [ge-im] - Game

5. 운동 [un-dong] - Exercise / Sports

6. 요리 [yo-ri] - Cooking

7. 독서 [dok-seo] - Reading

Usage: 저는 여행을 좋아해요. (I like traveling.)

2. Dynamic Activity Phrases (여가 활동)

In Korean, many hobbies are expressed as a "Noun + Verb" combination. Note the specific verbs used!

8. 사진을 찍다 [sa-ji-neul jjik-da] - To take photos

9. 자전거를 타다 [ja-jeon-geo-reul ta-da] - To ride a bicycle

10. 등산을 하다 [deung-sa-neul ha-da] - To go hiking

11. 산책을 하다 [san-chae-geul ha-da] - To take a walk

12. 그림을 그리다 [geu-ri-meul geu-ri-da] - To draw / paint

13. 노래를 하다 [no-rae-reul ha-da] - To sing

14. 춤을 추다 [chu-meul chu-da] - To dance

15. 쇼핑을 하다 [syo-ping-eul ha-da] - To go shopping

Usage: 주말에 산책을 해요. (I take a walk on weekends.)

3. The Golden Question

If you want to ask someone about their hobby, use this sentence:

"취미가 뭐예요?" [chwi-mi-ga mwo-ye-yo?] (What is your hobby?)

To answer, simply say: "제 취미는 [Hobby]이에요/예요." (My hobby is [Hobby].)

4. Soona's Culture Tip: PC Bangs and Noraebangs

If you visit Korea, you'll see two types of "rooms" (방) everywhere that are central to Korean leisure culture:

1. PC방 (PC Bang): These are high-end gaming centers. They aren't just for kids! People of all ages go there to play high-speed 게임 (games), order delicious food right to their desk, and hang out with friends.

2. 노래방 (Noraebang): Literally "Song Room" (Karaoke). Koreans LOVE to sing! Whether it's after a dinner with coworkers or a weekend hang with friends, going to a 노래방 to sing your favorite K-pop hits is a must-try experience.

Don't be shy—even if you're not a professional singer, the goal of a 노래방 is simply to have fun and release stress!
