[Learn Korean Day 25] Stay Connected: 15 Essential Smartphone & Social Media Words

Korean smartphone and social media vocabulary for staying connected.

Hello, Korean learners! Welcome back to Day 25 with Instructor Soona.

In modern-day South Korea, your smartphone is your lifeline! From paying for a taxi to ordering food and navigating the subway, everything is done through mobile apps. To live or travel in Korea comfortably, you need to know how to talk about your digital life.

Today, we are going to learn 15 essential words for smartphones, social media, and staying connected with your new Korean friends.

Let’s dive right in!

1. Device & Connectivity (기기와 연결)

Read these everyday digital nouns out loud:

1. 스마트폰 [seu-ma-teu-pon] - Smartphone

2. 휴대폰 [hyu-dae-pon] / 핸드폰 [haen-deu-pon] - Cell phone / Mobile phone

  • Note: "비번" is a very common shortened slang for password.

6. 배터리 [bae-teo-ri] - Battery

2. Social Media & Communication (소셜 미디어와 소통)

How do you stay in touch and share your life?

7. 앱 [aep] / 어플 [eo-peul] - App (Application)

8. 문자 [mun-ja] / 메시지 [me-si-ji] - Text message

10. 사진 [sa-jin] - Photo / Picture

11. 팔로우 [pal-lo-u] - Follow (on social media)

12. 댓글 [daet-geul] - Comment

3. Digital Action Verbs (동사)

13. 검색하다 [geom-saek-ha-da] - To search (on Google, Naver, etc.)

14. 보내다 [bo-nae-da] - To send (a message, a file)

  • Usage: 메시지를 보내요. (I send a message.)

15. 올리다 [ol-li-da] - To post / upload (on SNS)

  • Usage: 인스타그램에 사진을 올려요. (I post a photo on Instagram.)

4. Soona's Culture Tip: The KakaoTalk Culture

If you meet someone in Korea and want to stay in touch, you likely won't ask for their "phone number" (전화번호) first. Instead, you'll hear:

"카톡 아이디가 뭐예요?" [ka-tok a-i-di-ga mwo-ye-yo?] (What is your KakaoTalk ID?)

KakaoTalk (카톡) is the undisputed king of messaging in Korea. Everyone—from your landlord to your boss and your friends—uses it. It's much more than a chat app; you can send gifts, pay bills, and even use it to verify your identity.

When you want to ask for someone's contact information politely, you can say:

  • "연락처 좀 알려주세요." (Please let me know your contact info.)

  • "카톡 해요!" (Let's chat on Kakao!)

5. Mini Pop Quiz!

Let’s test your "Digital" vocabulary.

Q1. You are at a cafe and want to use the internet. What do you ask for?

A) 사진 B) 와이파이 비밀번호 C) 문자 보내다

Q2. Which verb means "To post or upload" a photo on social media?
