[Learn Korean Day 28] The Bridge of Sentences: 10 Essential Conjunctions

Hello, Korean learners! Welcome back to Day 28 with Instructor Soona.
Until now, we have learned how to make short, simple sentences. But in real life, we don't just speak in fragments! We connect our thoughts, explain reasons, and show contrast. To do this, you need Conjunctions (접속사).
Think of conjunctions as the "bridges" between your thoughts. Today, we will learn 10 essential words that will help you build longer, more professional-sounding sentences.
Let’s dive right in!
1. Adding & Connecting (첨가와 나열)
Use these when you want to add more information.
1. 그리고 [geu-ri-go] - And / And then
Usage: 저는 사과를 좋아해요. 그리고 딸기도 좋아해요.
(I like apples. And I also like strawberries.)
2. 그래서 [geu-rae-seo] - So / Therefore
Usage: 배가 고파요. 그래서 밥을 먹어요.
(I'm hungry. So I'm eating food.)
3. 그러면 [geu-reo-myeon] - Then / If so (In that case)
Usage: 한국어를 배우고 싶어요? 그러면 수나 샘 강의를 들으세요!
(Do you want to learn Korean? Then take Instructor Soona's class!)
2. Contrast & Turning (대조와 전환)
Use these when the next sentence is different from what was expected.
4. 하지만 [ha-ji-man] - But / However (General)
5. 그런데 [geu-reon-de] - But / By the way
Note: "그런데" is very versatile. It can mean "But" or be used to change the subject.
6. 그렇지만 [geu-reot-ji-man] - However / Nevertheless (Stronger than 하지만)
7. 그래도 [geu-rae-do] - Even so / Still
Usage: 한국어는 어려워요. 그래도 재미있어요!
(Korean is difficult. Even so, it's fun!)
3. Explaining & Choosing (이유와 선택)
8. 왜냐하면 [wae-nya-ha-myeon] - Because
Note: Usually starts a sentence to explain the reason for the previous one.
9. 아니면 [a-ni-myeon] - Or / If not
Usage: 커피 마실래요? 아니면 차 마실래요? (Would you like to drink coffee? Or would you like to drink tea?)
10. 특히 [teuk-hi] - Especially / Particularly
4. Soona's Culture Tip: The Magic of "그런데" (By the way)
In English, "But" and "By the way" are very different. But in Korean, "그런데" covers both!
If you want to interrupt someone politely or change the topic of conversation, just start with "그런데..." (Geu-reon-de...). It’s the perfect way to pivot the conversation without sounding rude.
Example: "날씨가 정말 좋네요. 그런데 점심 먹었어요?"
(The weather is great. By the way, did you eat lunch?)
5. Mini Pop Quiz!
Q1. You are hungry, "SO" you are going to a restaurant. Which word is "SO"?
A) 그리고 B) 그래서 C) 하지만
Q2. You want to offer a choice: "Coffee OR Tea?" Which word is "OR"?
A) 아니면 B) 특히 C) 그러면
(Answers: Q1-B, Q2-A)
