[Learn Korean Day 27] Asking Like a Pro: 10 Essential Question Words

Hello, Korean learners! Welcome back to Day 27 with Instructor Soona.
To have a real conversation, you need to do more than just make statements. You need to ask questions! Asking questions is the best way to show interest in others, get directions, and learn new things about Korean culture.
In English, we call these the "5W1H" (Who, What, Where, When, Why, How). In Korean, we call them 육하원칙 [yuk-ha-won-chik]. Today, we are going to learn 10 essential question words that will unlock a whole new level of conversation for you.
Let’s dive right in!
1. The Core 5W1H (육하원칙)
Read these out loud. These are the building blocks of any question:
1. 누구 [nu-gu] - Who
Usage: 누구예요? (Who is it?)
2. 언제 [eon-je] - When
Usage: 생일이 언제예요? (When is your birthday?)
3. 어디 [eo-di] - Where
Usage: 화장실이 어디예요? (Where is the restroom?)
4. 무엇 / 뭐 [mu-eot / mwo] - What
Note: "뭐" is the short, casual version of "무엇" used 99% of the time in speech.
5. 어떻게 [eo-tteo-ke] - How
6. 왜 [wae] - Why
2. Choosing and Describing (선택과 묘사)
Sometimes you need to be more specific. These words help you pick between options.
7. 어느 [eo-neu] - Which (Picking from a set)
Usage: 어느 나라 사람이에요? (Which country are you from?)
8. 무슨 [mu-seun] - What / What kind of (General)
Usage: 무슨 영화를 좋아해요? (What kind of movies do you like?)
9. 몇 [myeot] - How many / What (for numbers/time)
Usage: 몇 시예요? (What time is it?) / 몇 명이에요? (How many people?)
10. 얼마 [eol-ma] - How much (for price/amount)
Usage: 이거 얼마예요? (How much is this?)
3. How to Make a Question
In English, the word order changes when you ask a question (e.g., "You are..." vs "Are you...?"). In Korean, it is much simpler! The word order stays the same. You just:
Replace the information you want to know with the Question Word.
End the sentence with a rising Intonation.
Statement: 저는 미국 사람이에요. (I am American.)
Question: 어느 나라 사람이에요? (Which country are you from?)
4. Soona's Culture Tip: "무슨" vs "어느"
This is one of the most common questions I get from students! Both can be translated as "What" or "Which," but they have a subtle difference:
무슨 (mu-seun): Used when you are asking about something general or unknown. It’s like asking "What kind of...?"
무슨 음식 좋아해요?
(What kind of food do you like? - Infinite options)
어느 (eo-neu): Used when you are picking from a limited or specific set of options.
이 중에서 어느 것이 좋아요?
(Which one of these do you like? - Choosing from what's there)
If you're not sure, using "무슨" is usually a safe bet in most casual daily conversations!
5. Mini Pop Quiz!
Let’s test your "Questioning" skills.
Q1. You want to ask a friend "When" they are coming. Which word should you use?
A) 어디 B) 언제 C) 왜
Q2. You are at a store and want to ask "How much" the bag is. What is the phrase?
A) 누구예요? B) 뭐예요? C) 얼마예요?
