[Learn Korean Day 20] The Great Outdoors: 15 Essential Nature & Animal Words

[Learn Korean Day 20] The Great Outdoors: 15 Essential Nature & Animal Words

Essential Korean vocabulary for nature and common animal names.

Hello, Korean learners! Welcome back to Day 20 with Instructor Soona.

In our last lesson (Day 19), we learned how to describe the weather and the four seasons. Today, we are stepping outside to explore the world around us!

Korea is a country blessed with both stunning mountains and beautiful coastlines. Understanding the words for nature will help you describe your travels, and knowing animal names is essential for making small talk about pets.

Let’s learn 15 essential words for the great outdoors and our furry friends!

1. The Landscape (자연 경관)

Korea's geography is very diverse. Read these out loud:

1. 산 [san] - Mountain

  • Culture Fact: About 70% of South Korea is covered in mountains!

2. 바다 [ba-da] - Sea / Ocean 3. 강 [gang] - River

  • Usage: 한강 (The Han River in Seoul)

4. 하늘 [ha-neul] - Sky

5. 숲 [sup] - Forest / Woods

2. Plants & Small Things (식물)

What makes nature beautiful? Let's look at the greenery.

6. 꽃 [kkot] - Flower

7. 나무 [na-mu] - Tree

8. 풀 [pul] - Grass / Herb

9. 나비 [na-bi] - Butterfly

10. 별 [byeol] - Star

Usage: 꽃이 정말 예뻐요! (The flowers are really pretty! )

3. Our Animal Friends (동물)

Finally, let's learn the most common animal names.

11. 강아지 [gang-a-ji] - Puppy / Dog

  • Note: "개" means dog, but "강아지" is used much more affectionately for pets of any age.

12. 고양이 [go-yang-i] - Cat

13. 새 [sae] - Bird

14. 물고기 [mul-go-gi] - Fish (Living)

15. 토끼 [to-kki] - Rabbit / Bunny

4. Soona's Culture Tip: Do Korean Dogs Bark in Korean?

Have you ever wondered what sounds animals make in other languages?

Onomatopoeia (words that imitate sounds) is very different in Korea!

  • Dogs: In English, dogs go "Woof woof." In Korean, they say "멍멍" [mung-mung].

  • Cats: Instead of "Meow," Korean cats say "야옹" [ya-ong].

  • Birds: Instead of "Tweet tweet," they say "짹짹" [jjek-jjek].

If you want to sound like a local, try using these sounds when playing with a pet in Korea. It’s a great way to start a conversation with a Korean pet owner!

5. Mini Pop Quiz!

Let’s test your nature and animal vocabulary.
