[Learn Korean Day 19] Sun, Rain, and Snow: 15 Essential Weather & Season Words

Hello, Korean learners! Welcome back to Day 19 with Instructor Soona.
South Korea is famous for having four very distinct seasons. From the beautiful cherry blossoms in spring to the heavy snow in winter, the landscape changes completely every few months. Because the weather dictates everything from what we eat to what we wear, weather-related vocabulary is a huge part of daily conversation in Korea.
Today, we will learn 15 essential words to describe the seasons and the sky above us.
Let’s dive right in!
1. The Four Seasons (사계절)
Korea takes great pride in its four seasons. Read these out loud:
1. 봄 [bom] - Spring
2. 여름 [yeo-reum] - Summer
3. 가을 [ga-eul] - Fall / Autumn
4. 겨울 [gyeou-ul] - Winter
Usage: 저는 가을을 제일 좋아해요. (I like fall the most.)
2. Describing the Weather (날씨)
How do you answer when someone asks, "오늘 날씨 어때요?" (How is the weather today?)
5. 맑다 [mak-da] - To be clear / sunny
6. 흐리다 [heu-ri-da] - To be cloudy / overcast
7. 따뜻하다 [tta-tteut-ha-da] - To be warm (Spring vibe)
8. 덥다 [deop-da] - To be hot (Summer vibe)
9. 시원하다 [si-won-ha-da] - To be cool / refreshing (Fall vibe)
10. 춥다 [chup-da] - To be cold (Winter vibe)
Grammar Tip: When speaking, these change to: 맑아요, 흐려요, 따뜻해요, 더워요, 시원해요, 추워요.
3. Natural Phenomena (자연 현상)
Let's look at the specific elements you see in the sky.
11. 비 [bi] - Rain
Usage: 비가 와요. (It is raining.)
12. 눈 [nun] - Snow
Usage: 눈이 와요. (It is snowing.)
13. 바람 [ba-ram] - Wind
14. 구름 [gu-reum] - Cloud
15. 안개 [an-gae] - Fog / Mist
4. Soona's Culture Tip: Surviving "Jang-ma" and "Fine Dust"
If you are planning a trip to Korea, there are two weather phenomena you must know about:
1. 장마 [jang-ma] (Rainy Season): Usually occurring from late June to mid-July, this is a period of heavy, continuous rain. If you visit during this time, a sturdy umbrella and waterproof shoes are non-negotiable!
2. 미세먼지 [mi-se-meon-ji] (Fine Dust): Mainly in the spring (봄), you might notice the sky looking hazy. This is due to fine dust particles in the air. On these days, you will see many Koreans wearing KF94 masks outdoors. Most weather apps in Korea provide a "Fine Dust" index alongside the temperature!
5. Mini Pop Quiz!
Let’s test your weather knowledge!
Q1. Which season is famous for cherry blossoms and "warm" (따뜻하다) weather?
A) 여름 B) 봄 C) 겨울
Q2. You look outside and see white flakes falling from the sky. What is it?
A) 비 B) 구름 C) 눈
