[Learn Korean Day 18] How Are You Feeling? 15 Essential Feelings & Mood Words

Hello, Korean learners! Welcome back to Day 18 with Instructor Soona.
In our previous lessons, we learned how to describe people's appearance and personality (Day 17). Today, we are going to look inward. Being able to express how you feel is one of the most important parts of connecting with others and building real friendships.
In Korean, most words for feelings are Descriptive Verbs (Adjectives). Today, we will learn 15 essential words to describe your emotions and current mood.
Let’s dive right in!
1. Positive Feelings (긍정적인 기분)
How do you say you are having a great day? Read these out loud:
1. 기쁘다 [gi-ppeu-da] - To be glad / happy (about a specific event)
2. 행복하다 [haeng-bok-ha-da] - To be happy / blissful (a general state of happiness)
3. 즐겁다 [jeul-geop-da] - To be enjoyable / pleasant / fun
4. 신나다 [sin-na-da] - To be excited / thrilled
5. 상쾌하다 [sang-kwae-ha-da] - To be refreshed (like after a shower or a walk)
Usage: 오늘 정말 행복해요. (I am really happy today.)
2. Negative Feelings (부정적인 기분)
It's okay not to be okay! Here is how to express difficult emotions.
6. 슬프다 [seul-peu-da] - To be sad
7. 화나다 [hwa-na-da] - To be angry
8. 무섭다 [mu-seop-da] - To be scared / afraid
9. 걱정되다 [geok-jeong-dwe-da] - To be worried / anxious
10. 우울하다 [u-ul-ha-da] - To be depressed / blue
3. Physical & Social States (상태와 기분)
Sometimes your mood is tied to your physical state or your surroundings.
11. 힘들다 [him-deul-da] - To be hard / difficult / exhausting
Note: This is one of the most common words in Korea!
12. 피곤하다 [pi-gon-ha-da] - To be tired / fatigued
13. 심심하다 [sim-sim-ha-da] - To be bored (nothing to do)
14. 외롭다 [oe-rop-da] - To be lonely
15. 긴장되다 [gin-jang-dwe-da] - To be nervous (like before an exam)
4. Soona's Culture Tip: The Weight of "힘들다"
If you listen to Koreans talking, you will hear the word 힘들다 (him-deul-da) very often. While it literally means "to be hard" or "to be difficult," it is used to express a wide range of exhaustion—both physical and mental.
In Korean culture, saying "힘들어요" (It's hard) is often a way of seeking empathy. If a friend says this to you, the best response is not always to offer a solution, but to acknowledge their struggle by saying: "많이 힘들죠?" (It's really hard, isn't it?)
This small phrase shows that you understand their feelings and are "sharing" their burden. Sharing emotions is a key part of building 정 [jeong] (deep connection/affection) in Korea!
