[Learn Korean Day 14] Painting the World: 15 Essential Color Words

Hello, Korean learners! Welcome back to Day 14 with Instructor Soona.
In our previous lessons, we learned how to name the clothes we wear (Day 13) and the things around our house (Day 11). Now, how do we describe them in more detail?
If you want to buy a "red" shirt or say the sky is "blue," you need to know your colors! The Korean word for color is 색 [saek] or 색깔 [saek-kkal]. You will notice that almost every color word we learn today ends with this syllable "색".
Let’s add some color to your vocabulary with these 15 essential words!
1. The Core Colors (기본 색상)
Let's start with the most basic colors you see every day. Read them out loud:
1. 빨간색 [ppal-gan-saek] - Red
2. 파란색 [pa-ran-saek] - Blue
3. 노란색 [no-ran-saek] - Yellow
4. 초록색 [cho-rok-saek] - Green
5. 주황색 [ju-hwang-saek] - Orange
6. 보라색 [bo-ra-saek] - Purple
Usage: 저는 파란색을 좋아해요. (I like blue.)
2. Black, White, and Everything in Between (무채색)
How do you describe darkness, light, and neutral tones?
7. 까만색 [kka-man-saek] / 검은색 [geo-meun-saek] - Black
Note: Both are very common. "검은색" sounds slightly more formal.
8. 하얀색 [ha-yan-saek] / 흰색 [huin-saek] - White
9. 회색 [hoe-saek] - Gray
3. More Everyday Colors (기타 색상)
Here are a few more essential colors you will use very often in daily life!
10. 하늘색 [ha-neul-saek] - Sky blue
Note: "하늘" means the sky! So it literally translates to "sky color."
11. 분홍색 [bun-hong-saek] / 핑크색 [ping-keu-saek] - Pink
Note: "핑크색" (Pink) is used very often by younger generations.
12. 갈색 [gal-saek] - Brown
13. 남색 [nam-saek] - Navy / Indigo
14. 금색 [geum-saek] - Gold
15. 은색 [eun-saek] - Silver
Usage: 하늘색 셔츠를 입어요. (I wear a sky-blue shirt.)
4. Soona's Culture Tip: Color Nouns vs. Color Adjectives
In English, the word "Red" can be both a noun (Red is my favorite color) and an adjective (The apple is red).
In Korean, the words ending in -색 (saek) are strictly Nouns. If you want to describe an object using a verb at the end of a sentence, Korean has special Descriptive
Verbs (Adjectives) for colors!
Noun: 빨간색 (Red color)
Adjective Verb: 빨갛다 (To be red) -> 사과가 빨개요. (The apple is red.)
Noun: 파란색 (Blue color)
Adjective Verb: 파랗다 (To be blue) -> 하늘이 파래요. (The sky is blue.)
Don't worry about memorizing all the verb forms right now. For beginners, just stick to using the noun forms (빨간색, 파란색) to communicate effectively!
5. Mini Pop Quiz!
Let’s test your memory!
