[Learn Korean Day 15] Meet the Family: 15 Essential Family Words & Titles

Master Korean family titles and relationships with Instructor Soona.

Hello, Korean learners! Welcome back to Day 15 with Instructor Soona.


If you have ever watched a Korean drama, you have probably heard words like "Oppa" or "Unni" countless times. Family and age are incredibly important in Korean culture, which means the vocabulary we use to address our family members is very detailed and specific.

Unlike English, where "brother" is just "brother," Korean words change depending on your gender and who is older.


Today, we will learn 15 essential vocabulary words to introduce your family perfectly!



1. Parents & Grandparents (부모님과 조부모님)


Let's start with the elders in the family. Read these out loud:


1. 가족 [ga-jok] - Family


2. 부모님 [bu-mo-nim] - Parents


3. 엄마 [eom-ma] / 어머니 [eo-meo-ni] - Mom / Mother

  • Note: "엄마" is casual and affectionate (Mom), while "어머니" is more formal (Mother).


4. 아빠 [a-ppa] / 아버지 [a-beo-ji] - Dad / Father


5. 할머니 [hal-meo-ni] - Grandmother


6. 할아버지 [ha-ra-beo-ji] - Grandfather



2. Siblings (형제자매) - The Golden Rules!


This is the most famous (and sometimes confusing) part of Korean family vocabulary. The word you use depends on whether YOU are male or female.


If you are FEMALE:


7. 오빠 [o-ppa] - Older brother


8. 언니 [eon-ni] - Older sister


If you are MALE:


9. 형 [hyeong] - Older brother


10. 누나 [nu-na] - Older sister


For BOTH males and females:


If the sibling is younger than you, it is much easier!


11. 동생 [dong-saeng] - Younger sibling (general)


12. 남동생 [nam-dong-saeng] - Younger brother (남 means male)


13. 여동생 [yeo-dong-saeng] - Younger sister (여 means female)



3. Spouses (부부)


If you are married, here are the words you need:


14. 남편 [nam-pyeon] - Husband


15. 아내 [a-nae] / 와이프 [wa-i-peu] - Wife

  • Note: Many Koreans also use the English loanword "와이프".



4. Soona's Culture Tip: "Oppa" is not just for blood relatives!


Here is a fascinating aspect of Korean culture: The sibling titles we just learned (오빠, 형, 언니, 누나) are NOT restricted to your biological family.


In Korea, age defines the social hierarchy. If you become close friends with someone who is even just one year older than you, calling them by their first name is considered rude. Instead, you use these family titles as a sign of respect and affection!


  • If you are a girl and you have a close older male friend (or a boyfriend!), you call him 오빠 (Oppa).

  • If you are a guy and you have a close older male friend, you call him 형 (Hyung).


This is why Koreans ask about your age immediately when you meet (as we learned in Day 1). They need to know whether to call you a friend (친구) or use one of these respected family titles!
