[Learn Korean Day 11] Inside the House: 15 Essential Furniture & Room Words

Hello, Korean learners! Welcome back to Day 11 with Instructor Soona.


Over the past few lessons, we have been exploring the city and learning how to get around using public transportation. Now, it is time to go back home and relax!

Whether you are watching a Korean drama or planning to live in a Korean apartment (아파트), you will constantly hear words related to the house. Today, we will learn 15 essential vocabulary words for rooms, furniture, and home appliances.


Let’s dive right in!



1. Rooms in the House (방과 공간)


First, let's learn the names of the different spaces inside a house.


1. 집 [jip] - House / Home


2. 방 [bang] - Room

Usage: 제 방이에요. (This is my room.)


3. 거실 [geo-sil] - Living room


4. 부엌 [bu-eok] / 주방 [ju-bang] - Kitchen

  • Note: Both mean kitchen, but "주방" sounds slightly more modern or formal.


5. 화장실 [hwa-jang-sil] - Bathroom / Restroom



2. Essential Furniture (가구)


What is inside your room? Let's learn the basic furniture.


6. 침대 [chim-dae] - Bed


7. 책상 [chaek-sang] - Desk

  • Note: "책" means book, and "상" means table.


8. 의자 [eui-ja] - Chair


9. 소파 [so-pa] - Sofa / Couch


10. 옷장 [ot-jang] - Wardrobe / Closet

  • Note: "옷" means clothes.



3. Appliances & House Parts (가전제품과 집)


Finally, let's look at the items you use every day to keep the house running.


11. 냉장고 [naeng-jang-go] - Refrigerator


12. 텔레비전 [tel-le-bi-jeon] / 티비 [ti-bi] - Television


13. 세탁기 [se-tak-gi] - Washing machine


14. 문 [mun] - Door

Usage: 문을 열어 주세요. (Please open the door.)


15. 창문 [chang-mun] - Window




4. Soona's Culture Tip: Shoes Off and the Magic of "Ondol"


If you ever visit a Korean home, the absolute first rule you must remember is: Take off your shoes at the entrance!


Unlike many Western cultures where shoes are worn inside the house, Koreans keep their living spaces strictly shoe-free. Why? It connects back to a traditional and amazing Korean heating system called 온돌 (Ondol).


Ondol is an underfloor heating system. Instead of heating the air with a radiator, hot water pipes run under the floor, making the floor itself incredibly warm and cozy. Because the floor is so warm and clean, Koreans traditionally sit, eat, and even sleep directly on the floor!


So during the freezing Korean winter, coming home and stepping onto a warm Ondol floor is one of the best feelings in the world.
