[Learn Korean Day 9] Where Is It? Essential Directions & Location Words

Hello, Korean learners! Welcome back to Day 9 with Instructor Soona.
In Day 8, we learned the names of important places like the pharmacy, bank, and restroom. But knowing the name of a place is only half the battle. If someone tells you the pharmacy is "next to the bank" or "straight ahead," you need to understand those direction words!
Today, we are going to learn the most essential words for basic positions and directions. By the end of this lesson, you will never get lost in South Korea again.
Let’s dive right in!
1. Basic Position Nouns (위치 명사)
First, let's learn how to describe where an object or a place is located. Read these out loud:
1. 앞 [ap] - Front
2. 뒤 [dwi] - Back / Behind
3. 위 [wi] - Top / Above / On
4. 아래 [a-rae] / 밑 [mit] - Bottom / Below / Under
5. 옆 [yeop] - Beside / Next to
6. 안 [an] - Inside
7. 밖 [bak] - Outside
Grammar Tip: To say "IN the front" or "ON top," simply attach the location particle 에 [e] to these words. (e.g., 앞에 = in front of, 옆에 = next to).
2. Navigating the Streets (방향)
When you are walking on the street or looking at a map, you need to know your left and right!
8. 왼쪽 [oen-jjok] - Left side
9. 오른쪽 [o-reun-jjok] - Right side
10. 똑바로 [ttok-ba-ro] / 직진 [jik-jin] - Straight ahead
11. 이쪽 [i-jjok] - This way
12. 저쪽 [jeo-jjok] - That way over there
Usage Example: "화장실 어디예요?" (Where is the restroom?) ->
"오른쪽에 있어요." (It is on the right side.)
3. Soona's Culture Tip: Surviving in a Korean Taxi
If you take a taxi in Seoul, it is extremely helpful to know how to give the driver basic directions. You can easily do this by combining the direction words we just learned with the phrase "가주세요" (Please go).
To make it sound perfectly natural, add the direction particle 으로/로 [eu-ro / ro] (towards):
"왼쪽으로 가주세요." (Please go to the left.)
"오른쪽으로 가주세요." (Please go to the right.)
"직진해 주세요." (Please go straight ahead.)
And when you finally reach your destination, you can politely ask the driver to stop by saying:
"여기에 세워 주세요." (Please stop here.)
Memorize these four phrases, and you will sound like a true local when riding a taxi!
4. Mini Pop Quiz!
Let’s test your navigation skills.
Q1. Your friend is waiting for you "next to" the convenience store. Which word means "Next to / Beside"?
A) 앞 B) 뒤 C) 옆
Q2. You are in a taxi and want the driver to "Go straight." What is the most natural way to say this?
A) 직진해 주세요. B) 오른쪽에 있어요. C) 안으로 가주세요.
(Answers at the bottom of the page!)
5. Mini Pop Quiz!
Let’s test your memory! Taking quizzes is the fastest way to lock new vocabulary into your brain.
Q1. You have a terrible headache and need to buy some medicine. Where should you go?
A) 은행 B) 약국 C) 우체국
