[Learn Korean Day 8] Navigating the City: 15 Essential Places & Buildings

Navigating the city: 15 essential Korean places and buildings vocabulary.

Hello, Korean learners! Welcome back to Day 8 with Instructor Soona.

Now that you know how to order food and drinks (from Day 7), it is time to step outside and explore the city. Whether you are living in Seoul or just visiting for a vacation, knowing the names of essential buildings and places is critical for your survival.

What if you need to buy medicine, find a restroom, or exchange money? Today, we will learn the 15 most important places in a Korean city so you can navigate like a local.

Let’s dive right in!

1. Everyday Life & Hangouts

These are the places you will likely visit on a daily basis. Read them out loud slowly:

1. 학교 [hak-kyo] - School

2. 회사 [hwe-sa] - Company / Office

3. 화장실 [hwa-jang-sil] - Restroom / Toilet

  • Note: This is arguably the most important word on this list!

4. 공원 [gong-won] - Park

5. 편의점 [pyeo-nui-jeom] - Convenience Store

  • Culture Fact: Korean convenience stores are open 24/7. You can buy food, charge your transit card, and even eat ramen inside!

2. Errands & Emergencies

If you need to get things done or handle an emergency, remember these words.

6. 은행 [eun-haeng] - Bank

7. 우체국 [u-che-guk] - Post Office

8. 병원 [byeong-won] - Hospital / Clinic

  • Note: In Korea, even small local clinics are called "병원".

9. 약국 [yak-guk] - Pharmacy

10. 경찰서 [gyeong-chal-seo] - Police Station

3. Shopping, Culture & Travel

For your free time and travel needs, use these vocabulary words.

11. 도서관 [do-seo-gwan] - Library

12. 시장 [si-jang] - Traditional Market

13. 백화점 [baek-hwa-jeom] - Department Store

14. 공항 [gong-hang] - Airport

15. 대사관 [dae-sa-gwan] - Embassy

  • Tip: If you lose your passport while traveling, you need to go to your country's 대사관!

4. Soona's Culture Tip: The Ultimate Survival Phrase

You know the word for "Restroom" (화장실). But how do you actually ask where it is?

In Korean, asking for a location is very simple. You just put the place noun first, and then add the magic phrase 어디예요? [eo-di-ye-yo?] which means "Where is it?".

  • 화장실 어디예요? (Where is the restroom?)

  • 약국 어디예요? (Where is the pharmacy?)

  • 지하철역 어디예요? (Where is the subway station?)

If you memorize this simple structure, you will never get lost in South Korea!

5. Mini Pop Quiz!

Let’s test your memory! Taking quizzes is the fastest way to lock new vocabulary into your brain.

Q1. You have a terrible headache and need to buy some medicine. Where should you go?

A) 은행 B) 약국 C) 우체국
