[Learn Korean Day 7] Ordering Like a Local: Essential Cafe & Restaurant Words

Hello, Korean learners! Welcome to Day 7 with Instructor Soona.
In our previous lessons, we mastered Korean numbers—how to read prices and how to count items. Now, it is time to put those numbers to good use! If you travel to South Korea, visiting aesthetic cafes and delicious Korean BBQ restaurants will be a huge part of your itinerary.
However, staring at a Korean menu can be intimidating if you do not know the right words. Today, we are going to learn the most essential Korean vocabulary you need to survive and order confidently at any cafe or restaurant.
Let’s dive right in!
1. Essential Places & Items
First, let's learn the basic nouns you will see everywhere. Read them out loud slowly:
1. 카페 [ka-pe] - Cafe
Culture Fact: Korea has one of the highest numbers of cafes per capita in the world. You will see a "카페" on almost every street corner!
2. 식당 [sik-dang] - Restaurant
Usage: 한국 식당 (Korean restaurant)
3. 메뉴판 [me-nyu-pan] - Menu (The physical board or book)
Note: You can simply say "메뉴" (menu), but "메뉴판" specifically refers to the menu book.
4. 물 [mul] - Water
Culture Tip: In almost all Korean restaurants, "물" is completely free and often self-serve (셀프).
5. 영수증 [yeong-su-jeung] - Receipt
Usage: Cashiers will often ask, "영수증 드릴까요?" (Would you like your receipt?)
6. 진동벨 [jin-dong-bel] - Vibrating buzzer / Pager
Note: "진동" means vibration, and "벨" means bell. You receive this at cafes after ordering.
2. Essential Verbs & Phrases
Now, let's look at the action words you need to use.
7. 먹다 [meok-da] - To eat
8. 마시다 [ma-si-da] - To drink
9. 주문하다 [ju-mun-ha-da] - To order
Usage: "주문할게요" (I would like to order.)
10. 맛있어요 [ma-sit-seo-yo] - It is delicious!
Usage: Say this to the restaurant owner when you leave, and they will give you the biggest smile.
11. 주세요 [ju-se-yo] - Please give me...
Usage: This is your ultimate magic word for ordering. Just put any noun or counter (from Day 4) in front of it.
물 주세요. (Water, please.)
아메리카노 두 잔 주세요. (Two cups of Americano, please.)
3. Soona's Culture Tip: How to Call the Staff?
In many Western countries, you quietly wait at your table for the server to approach you. If you do that in Korea, you might wait forever!
Korean restaurants are fast-paced. Look at your table—you will usually find a small Call Button (벨). Just press it! If there is no button, you can raise your hand and politely call out:
"여기요!" [yeo-gi-yo] (Literally means: "Over here!")
Also, in Korean cafes, the staff will not bring your coffee to your table. Instead, they will hand you a 진동벨 (Buzzer). When your coffee is ready, it will vibrate and flash red. Return it to the counter to pick up your delicious drink!
4. Mini Pop Quiz!
Let’s test your memory! Taking quizzes is the fastest way to lock new vocabulary into your brain.

5. Mini Pop Quiz!
Let’s test your memory of the calendar!
Q1. How do you say "October" in Korean? (Hint: Remember the exception!)
A) 십월 B) 시월 C) 십일월
Q2. Which is the correct Korean date format for "August 15, 2025"?
