[Learn Korean Day 2] Where Are You From? 20 Essential Countries & Occupations

Hello, Korean learners!

Welcome back to Day 2 with Instructor Soona.

In Day 1, we learned the "Secret Social Code" of polite Korean and how to say "Hello, my name is...". But a great self-introduction doesn't stop at your name! People will naturally want to know where you are from and what you do for a living.

Today, we are going to learn 20 essential Korean vocabulary words covering major countries and common occupations. By the end of this post, you will be able to introduce yourself completely like a native speaker!

Let’s dive right in!

1. Top 10 Countries in Korean (나라)

Many country names in Korean sound similar to their English names, but with a unique Korean pronunciation. Others, however, are completely different because they are based on Hanja (Chinese characters).

Read these out loud slowly:

1. 한국 [han-guk] - South Korea

2. 미국 [mi-guk] - United States of America

3. 영국 [yeong-guk] - United Kingdom

4. 호주 [ho-ju] - Australia

5. 캐나다 [kae-na-da] - Canada

6. 중국 [jung-guk] - China

7. 일본 [il-bon] - Japan

8. 프랑스 [peu-rang-seu] - France

9. 독일 [do-gil] - Germany

10. 인도 [in-do] - India

Note: To say your nationality, simply add the word 사람 [sa-ram] (person) after the country name! For example, 한국 사람 (Korean person), 캐나다 사람 (Canadian).

2. Top 10 Occupations in Korean (직업)

Now, let's look at 10 of the most common occupations. Knowing your job title in Korean is crucial for networking and making friends.

11. 의사 [eui-sa] - Doctor

12. 간호사 [gan-ho-sa] - Nurse

13. 요리사 [yo-ri-sa] - Chef / Cook

14. 경찰관 [gyeong-chal-gwan] - Police Officer

15. 소방관 [so-bang-gwan] - Firefighter

16. 엔지니어 [en-ji-ni-eo] - Engineer

17. 변호사 [byeon-ho-sa] - Lawyer

18. 가수 [ga-su] - Singer

19. 배우 [bae-u] - Actor / Actress

20. 사업가 [sa-eop-ga] - Businessperson / Entrepreneur

(Don't forget the ones we learned in Day 1:

학생 [student], 회사원 [office worker], and 선생님 [teacher]!)

3. How to Make Full Sentences!

You have the words. Now, let's put them into polite sentences using the "I am" structure: 이에요/예요 [i-e-yo / ye-yo].

• If the noun ends in a consonant (batchim), use 이에요.

• If the noun ends in a vowel, use 예요

• 저는 미국 사람이에요. (I am an American.)

• 저는 호주 사람이에요. (I am an Australian.)

• 저는 의사예요. (I am a doctor.)

• 저는 경찰관이에요. (I am a police officer.)

Why do Koreans ask about your job so quickly?

If you meet a Korean person for the first time, you might be surprised when they ask about your age or occupation within the first 5 minutes! In some cultures, this can feel too personal or direct.

However, in Korean culture, this is not meant to be rude or overly nosy. Remember the "Secret Social Code" from Day 1? Koreans need to know your age and social status (occupation) to quickly determine the correct level of politeness (존댓말 or 반말) and the proper titles to use when speaking to you.

So, next time a Korean friend asks "직업이 뭐예요?" (What is your job?), you can proudly answer using the words you learned today!
