[Learn Korean Day 1] The "Korean Mindset" & Essential Words for Your First Introduction

Updated: 1 day ago

Korean greetings and pronouns vocabulary for beginners with Instructor Soona.

Hello, Korean learners! I am Instructor Soona.

If you want to learn Korean, you might be eager to memorize hundreds of words immediately. But wait! Before you dive into thick vocabulary books, there is a "Secret Social Code" in the Korean language that you absolutely must understand first.

If you don't know this code, even a simple word like "I" or "You" can cause awkward situations. Today, we will unlock this secret and learn the most essential Korean vocabulary to introduce yourself properly!

Let’s dive right in!

1. The Secret Social Code: Polite vs. Casual Korean

Unlike English, the Korean language changes completely depending on WHO you are talking to. We have two main "modes" of speaking. Understanding this is the first step to mastering Korean.

  • 존댓말 (Jon-daen-mal): Polite / Formal Korean

    • When to use: With strangers, older people, teachers, colleagues, or anyone you are not close friends with.

    • Rule of thumb: If you are a beginner learning Korean, ALWAYS use 존댓말. It is 100% safe and respectful.

  • 반말 (Ban-mal): Casual / Informal Korean

    • When to use: ONLY with very close friends, your younger siblings, or children.

Because of these two modes, even basic Korean pronouns like "I" and "We" have different words! Let's look at the essential vocabulary based on this rule.

2. Core Korean Pronouns: I, You, and We

I / Me

  • 저 [jeo]: "I" (Polite - 존댓말)

    • Use this 99% of the time as a beginner! It lowers yourself to show respect to the listener.

  • 나 [na]: "I" (Casual - 반말)

    • Only use this with close friends.

We / Us

  • 저희 [jeo-hui]: "We" (Polite - 존댓말)

    • Used when speaking to someone older or a stranger.

  • 우리 [u-ri]: "We" (Casual & General)

    • Culture Tip: Koreans LOVE the word "우리" (Our). Instead of saying "my mom" or "my country," Koreans usually say "our mom (우리 엄마)" and "our country (우리 나라)". It shows a strong sense of community!

You

  • 너 [neo]: "You" (Casual - 반말)

    • Only for close friends or younger people.

  • WARNING - How to say "You" politely in Korean?

    • In English, "you" is used everywhere. But in polite Korean, we avoid using the word "You" directly! It can sound rude.

    • Solution: Instead of "You", use the person's Name + 씨 [ssi] (Mr./Ms.) or their Title (like 선생님 - Teacher).

    • Example: Instead of saying "Are you busy?", say "Is Soona busy? (수나 씨 바빠요?)"

3. Essential Korean Words for Your First Introduction

Now that you know the polite "I" (저), let's learn the core words to build your first Korean self-introduction!

1. 안녕하세요 [an-nyeong-ha-se-yo]

  • Meaning: Hello / How are you? (Polite)

  • Note: This is the safest way to greet anyone in Korea.

2. 감사합니다 [gam-sa-ham-ni-da]

  • Meaning: Thank you. (Polite/Formal)

3. 이름 [i-reum]

  • Meaning: Name

  • Usage: 제 이름은 [Name]입니다. (My name is...)

4. 사람 [sa-ram]

  • Meaning: Person / People

  • Usage: To say your nationality, put your country name before '사람'.

    • 미국 (USA) + 사람 = 미국 사람 (American)

    • 호주 (Australia) + 사람 = 호주 사람 (Australian)

5. 직업 [ji-geop]

  • Meaning: Job / Occupation

6. 학생 [hak-saeng]

  • Meaning: Student

  • Usage: 저는 학생이에요. (I am a student.)

7. 선생님 [seon-saeng-nim]

  • Meaning: Teacher

  • Note: '님(nim)' is an honorific title added to show great respect! Never call yourself a '선생님'; only use it for others.

4. Soona's Culture Tip: The "Bowing" Culture

When you say "안녕하세요 (Hello)" or "감사합니다 (Thank you)" in 존댓말 (Polite mode), try slightly bowing your head and shoulders!

In Korean culture, bowing is a physical expression of the polite language. You don't need a deep 90-degree bow every time—a simple 15 to 30-degree nod while making eye contact and smiling will make a fantastic first impression.

5. Mini Pop Quiz!

Let’s see if you remember the "Korean Mindset" we just learned! Taking quizzes helps you memorize Korean vocabulary faster.

A) 나 [na] B) 저 [jeo] C) 너 [neo]

Q2. How do Koreans naturally refer to "My mom" or "My country"?
