Learn Korean with News: The Trot Craze - Korea's Traditional Pop Music Syndrome
Hello, Korean learners! It's Soona. When you think of Korean music, K-pop idols probably come to mind first. But did you know there is another massive music genre taking over South Korea right now? It's called '트로트' (Trot)!
Trot is Korea's oldest form of pop music, originating in the early 20th century. It is famous for its unique vocal technique called '꺾기' (Kkeokki), where singers beautifully bend their notes. For a long time, Trot was considered "music for older people." However, everything changed recently thanks to immensely popular TV audition programs. Young, talented, and good-looking Trot singers emerged, capturing the hearts of not only grandmothers but also the '2030 generation' (Millennials and Gen Z)! Now, Trot fandoms stream songs and organize fan clubs just as actively as K-pop idol fans do.
In today’s interactive lesson, we will dive into the history and secret behind the Trot syndrome while mastering practical vocabulary and advanced grammar patterns for describing social trends: 'N을/를 기점으로' (Starting from N), 'V-(으)ㅁ에 따라' (As [A happens], [B happens]), and 'N 못지않게' (Just as much as N).
