Learn Korean with News: The 'Eol-Juk-Ah' Phenomenon - Why Koreans Love Iced Americano
Hello, Korean learners! It's Soona. If you visit Korea, especially during the freezing winter, you will witness a very shocking sight. Even when the temperature drops below zero, you will see countless Koreans walking down the street holding plastic cups filled with ice!
What are they drinking? It’s '아아' (A-Ah), the abbreviation for Iced Americano. Koreans love this cold, bitter drink so much that there is even a popular slang word for it: '얼죽아' (Eol-Juk-Ah), which stands for "I will drink Iced Americano even if I freeze to death!" But why are Koreans so obsessed with it?
First, it perfectly matches the '빨리빨리' (Hurry, hurry) culture because it takes less than a minute to make. Second, it neatly cleanses the mouth after eating spicy and salty Korean food. Lastly, for exhausted office workers and students, it acts as a much-needed '카페인 수혈' (caffeine blood transfusion) to survive their busy day.
In today’s interactive lesson, we will dive into this unique coffee culture while mastering practical vocabulary and essential intermediate grammar patterns: 'A/V-(으)ㄹ 정도로' (To the extent that...), 'A/V-(으)ㄴ/는 셈이다 (It is practically...), and 'A-아/어하다' (To show emotion - 3rd person).
