Learn Korean with News: Korean Wedding Culture - From 'S-Deu-Me' to Small Weddings

Hello, Korean learners! It's Soona. Have you ever been to a Korean wedding, or seen one in a K-drama? Korean weddings are famous for being incredibly fast-paced and efficient! There is even a specific slang term, '스드메' (S-deu-me), which is short for Studio (photography), Dress, and Makeup—the holy trinity of wedding preparation in Korea.

Another unique feature is the '축의금' (Congratulatory money) culture. Instead of bringing wedding gifts, guests bring envelopes of cash and immediately receive a meal ticket for a massive buffet after the ceremony! However, times are changing. Recently, more and more young couples are choosing quiet, meaningful 'Small Weddings' over glamorous and rushed wedding halls.

In today’s interactive lesson, we will dive into this fascinating wedding culture while mastering essential vocabulary and practical intermediate grammar patterns, including 'V-고 나서' (After doing something), 'N 대신(에)' (Instead of N), and '-아/어지다' (To become / To get).

Be sure to click the sentences in the interactive module below to listen to the premium native audio, and practice your speaking out loud! Let’s explore how Koreans celebrate marriage and upgrade your Korean fluency today!
