Learn Korean with News: Korean Subway Culture - Priority Seats & Pregnant Women's Seats

Hello, Korean learners! It's Soona. If you have ever taken a subway or bus in Korea, you might have noticed a very interesting and heartwarming phenomenon. Even during rush hour, when the train is incredibly packed and everyone is tired, there are certain seats at the ends of the train cars that almost always remain completely empty. Why is that?

These are the '노약자석' (Priority Seating for the elderly, disabled, and weak). Because Korean culture places a huge emphasis on respecting elders ('경로효친'), young people consciously leave these seats empty so that anyone who truly needs them can sit down immediately without having to ask. Additionally, there are highly visible pink seats called '임산부 배려석' (Pregnant Women Priority Seats) right in the middle of the train cars to protect early-stage pregnant women.

In today’s interactive lesson, we will dive into this beautiful culture of consideration ('배려') while mastering essential vocabulary and highly practical intermediate grammar patterns: 'V-아/어 두다/놓다' (To leave it / To do in advance), 'V-도록 하다' (To make sure to do...), and 'A/V-(으)ㄹ 정도로' (To the extent that...).

Be sure to click the sentences in the interactive module below to listen to the premium native audio, and practice your speaking out loud! Let’s explore the warm-hearted side of Korean society and upgrade your Korean fluency today!
