Learn Korean with News: The Sea Women of Jeju - Exploring Haenyeo Culture

Hello, Korean learners! It's Soona. Have you ever heard of the real-life mermaids of Korea? In Jeju Island, there are incredible women known as '해녀' (Haenyeo), or "sea women." Without any oxygen tanks or modern breathing equipment, they dive deep into the ocean to harvest seafood, relying solely on their own breath.

Haenyeo culture is incredibly unique. Most of these divers are elderly women in their 60s, 70s, and even 80s! But more importantly, their culture represents a beautiful coexistence with nature. They never get greedy, strictly avoiding harvesting during spawning seasons to protect the ocean's ecosystem. Their wisdom, passed down through generations, has even been recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

In today’s interactive lesson, we will dive into the awe-inspiring world of Jeju Haenyeo while mastering new practical intermediate grammar patterns, including '-(으)ㄹ 뿐만 아니라' (Not only A, but also B), '-기 위해(서)' (In order to), and '-아/어 오다' (Have been doing).

Be sure to click the sentences in the interactive module below to listen to the premium native audio, and practice your speaking out loud! Let’s explore the profound wisdom of the Korean sea women and upgrade your Korean fluency today!
