The Shape-Shifters: Korean 'ㄷ' Irregular Verbs (ㄷ 불규칙)

Are you looking for the best Korean learning materials to master grammar? Welcome to Soona Study Lab's Grammar Masterclass! Today, we are tackling another frequently used yet confusing grammar point for Korean learners:
The 'ㄷ' Irregular Verbs (ㄷ 불규칙 동사).
Korean 'ㄷ' irregular verbs include some of the most essential daily actions like Listening (듣다), Walking (걷다), and Asking (묻다).
Here is the tricky part: when these verb stems ending in 'ㄷ' meet a grammar pattern that starts with a vowel like '-아/어요' or '-(으)면', they completely change their shape! The 'ㄷ' magically transforms into 'ㄹ' (like 걷다 -> 걸어요).
Don't worry! Because these words are related to daily activities, you will use them all the time. Once you understand this simple rule, you will sound much more natural. We'll also cover the "fake irregulars" (the regular exceptions like 받다 and 닫다) that you must memorize.
Click the play buttons in the interactive module below to listen to the native pronunciation and practice reading out loud! (The full text and discussion questions are provided at the bottom of the page.)
Mastering Korean Irregulars
Memorizing the rule of the 'ㄷ' irregular verb is just the first step. To truly speak Korean with confidence, you need to practice saying words like "들어요" and "걸었어요" out loud until they become muscle memory. Stop calculating the grammar in your head and start speaking!
