Korean Grammar Basic #9 – How to Use “밖에” (Only / Nothing But)

1️⃣ Introduction

In English, you can say:“I only have one friend.”“There’s nothing but rice at home.” In Korean, we express this idea using 밖에,but remember — it must be followed by a negative expression (like 없다, 안 하다, or 모르다).

2️⃣ Grammar Explanation

🔹 밖에 (bak-ke) — “Only / Nothing but”

Form

Noun+밖에 + Negative Verb
  • It emphasizes that something is limited — that there’s nothing else except that thing. So while English uses “only” (positive), Korean expresses it negatively:

  • “Only one” → “There isn’t more than one.”

Usage

Use 밖에 to express:

  • Limitation: There’s nothing else beyond that.

  • Emphasis: Stressing “just this one thing.”

  • Slight regret or disappointment nuance (optional).

Example Sentences

1️⃣ 친구가 한 명밖에 없어요.(chin-gu-ga han myeong-bak-kke eop-sseo-yo)

→ I only have one friend. (lit. I don’t have more than one friend.)

2️⃣ 돈이 천 원밖에 없어요.(do-ni cheon-won-bak-kke eop-sseo-yo)

→ I only have 1,000 won.

3️⃣ 시간밖에 없어요.(si-gan-bak-kke eop-sseo-yo)

→ I have nothing but time.

4️⃣ 한국어밖에 몰라요.(han-gu-geo-bak-kke mol-la-yo)

→ I only know Korean.

5️⃣ 물밖에 안 마셔요.(mul-bak-kke an ma-syeo-yo)

→ I drink only water.

Important Grammar Tip

  • 밖에 is ALWAYS used with a negative form.

Correct:

  • 친구밖에 없어요.

  • 물밖에 안 마셔요.

  • 한국어밖에 몰라요.

Wrong:

  • 친구밖에 있어요. (X)

  • 물밖에 마셔요. (X)

3️⃣ Comparison: 밖에 vs 만

  • Both 밖에 (bak-ke) and 만 (man) can mean “only,”but they are used differently and have different feelings in Korean.

  • In real life, Koreans often use 밖에 when emphasizing lack or limitation and  when simply describing focus or choice.

  • Use “밖에” when you mean there’s nothing else (and it feels limited).

  • Use “만” when you’re just highlighting one thing (neutral or factual).

🔹 밖에 — “Only / Nothing but” (Negative + Limited)

  • Always used with a negative verb such as 없어요, 안 해요, 몰라요.

  • Implies limitation or insufficiency — that there’s nothing else available or not enough.

Often sounds slightly regretful, limited, or factual.

Examples:

1️⃣ 친구가 한 명밖에 없어요.(chin-gu-ga han myeong-bak-kke eop-sseo-yo)

→ I only have one friend. (feels like “I wish I had more.”)

2️⃣ 돈이 천 원밖에 없어요.(do-ni cheon-won-bak-kke eop-sseo-yo)

→ I only have 1,000 won. (implies “That’s all I have, not enough.”)

🔹 만 — “Only / Just” (Neutral or Positive)

  • Used with any verb, including positive ones.

  • Simply emphasizes focus or exclusivity, not limitation.

  • Sounds neutral or factual, sometimes even light or positive.

Examples:

1️⃣ 친구가 한 명만 있어요.(chin-gu-ga han myeong-man i-sseo-yo)

→ I have only one friend. (neutral, not expressing regret — just stating a fact.)

2️⃣ 돈이 천 원만 있어요.(do-ni cheon-won-man i-sseo-yo)

→ I have only 1,000 won. (can mean “That’s all I brought,” not necessarily “too little.”)
