Korean Grammar Basic #6 – How to Use “에 / 에서” (at / in / from)

Updated: Oct 24, 2025

Learn how to use 에 (e) and 에서 (e-seo) to describe places, locations, and directions in Korean. These two location particles are essential for expressing where something is, happens, or starts.

1️⃣ Introduction

In English, “at,” “in,” and “from” are used differently depending on place or movement.

In Korean,  and 에서 cover these meanings — but their usage depends on whether the verb shows movement or action.

2️⃣ Grammar Explanation

🔹 에 (e) — “At / In / To” (location, direction, or existence)

Used to express where something exists or where someone goes.

It is mainly used with static verbs such as 있다 (to be), 없다 (to not be), and movement verbs like 가다 (to go), 오다 (to come), 살다 (to live).

Form

Noun + 에

Usage

  • To show existence: “There is something at/in a place.”

  • To show direction: “Go/come to a place.”

  • To show destination: “Arrive at a place.”

Example

Meaning

집에 있어요. (ji-be i-sseo-yo)

I’m at home.

학교에 가요. (hak-gyo-e ga-yo)

I go to school.

회사에 왔어요. (hoe-sa-e wa-sseo-yo)

I came to the office.

Tip:

  • Use  for places where something stays or moves to.

  • Do not use 에서 with verbs like 있다, 없다, or 살다 — that’s a very common beginner mistake.

🔹 에서 (e-seo) — “At / In / From” (place of action or origin)

Used to express where an action happens or where something starts from.It connects a place with an active verb like 하다(do), 먹다(eat), 공부하다(study), or 오다(from).

Form

Noun + 에서

Usage

  • To show place of an action: “Do something at/in a place.”

  • To show starting point: “Come from a place.”

Example

Meaning

학교에서 공부해요. (hak-gyo-e-seo gong-bu-hae-yo)

I study at school.

식당에서 밥을 먹어요. (sik-dang-e-seo ba-beul meo-geo-yo)

I eat at a restaurant.

부산에서 왔어요. (bu-sa-ne-seo wa-sseo-yo)-

I came from Busan.

Tip:

  • Use 에서 for actions that happen in a place.

  • Use  when you are in a place or going to it.

  • Verbs like 공부하다, 일하다, 먹다, 운동하다 → always 에서.

3️⃣ Comparison: 에 vs 에서

Think of it like this:

When something exists or stays somewhere, use 에 (e).When something happens or is done somewhere, use 에서 (e-seo).

So,

  • If you’re describing a location — where someone is, lives, or goes to

    → use .

👉 집에 있어요 (I’m at home).👉 학교에 가요 (I go to school).

  • But if you’re describing an action — what someone does in that place

    → use 에서.

👉 학교에서 공부해요 (I study at school).👉 식당에서 밥을 먹어요 (I eat at a restaurant).

In short:

에 = static / state

에서 = action / activity
